Choosing a 24″ kids’ bike

There is more variety in the 24″ range than the wheel size might suggest. One child might want a bike for riding to the park and keeping up on family outings; another might spend every weekend looking for the next trail. Start with where they actually ride, then compare bikes suited to that ground.

A rigid fork keeps the front of a bike simpler, while a suitable suspension fork can help a young mountain biker on rougher trails. Tyres, brakes and gearing also change how a bike feels. Look at the whole build rather than choosing on the strength of one component. A suspension fork, for example, is only useful if it suits the rider and the riding they do.

Fit comes first. Check your child’s height against the manufacturer’s guide for the individual bike, then consider how easily they can get on, reach the brakes and manage the bike when stopping or turning. A 24″ bike bought with plenty of growing room still needs to feel manageable on its first ride.

What age is a 24″ kids’ bike for?

Around 7-10 years old is a useful guide. Our general size chart suggests looking at 24″ wheels for riders around 127–150 cm tall, but brands set different fit ranges for individual bikes. Measure your child and check the guidance for the model you choose.

How do I choose between a 20″ and a 24″ bike?

If a 20″ bike is becoming cramped, compare your child’s height with the size guidance for both wheel sizes. They should be able to reach the controls and handle the larger bike comfortably now. There is overlap between sizes, so confidence and the fit of the individual model matter.

Does my child need suspension on a 24″ bike?

That depends on where they ride. A rigid-fork bike can be a good choice for paths, family rides and some lighter off-road use. For regular rougher trails, compare bikes with suspension designed for younger riders. Check the complete bike, including its weight, tyres and brakes, before deciding.

Are all 24″ kids’ bikes mountain bikes?

No. Although many in this range are junior mountain bikes, 24″ refers to the wheel diameter, not a riding discipline. Compare each bike’s tyres and equipment with the riding your child will do most often.
